The White Sands NP lies geologically in a basin. Water which flows from the mountains containing limestone (Kalkstein) washes out gypsum. In the depression the water evaporates and Gypsum is trapped within the basin. Thus, the White Sands N.P is a Gypsum (Gips) desert.
